About Personality Disorders
Personality Disorders (formerly referred to as character disorders) encompass an array of behaviors that evidence an enduring pattern of inner experience and behavior that deviates markedly from the expectations of the culture of the individual who exhibits them. The patterns seen in Personality Disorders are typically associated with severe disturbances in the behavioral tendencies, usually involving several areas of the personality, and are almost always associated with considerable personal and social disruption. Additionally, personality disorders are inflexible and pervasive across many situations, due in large part to the fact that such behavior is consistent with the ego integrity of the individual and thus perceived to be appropriate by that individual. This behavior can produce maladaptive coping skills, which may lead to problems that create extreme anxiety, distress and depression.
The treatment protocols for Personality Disorders frequently begin with a such for underlying causes, as important correlations between childhood trauma and abuse and the onset of symptoms, particularly in late adolescence and early adulthood. Depending on the instigating circumstances and the nature of the particular disorders, an individual treatment plan of psychotherapy and potentially medication as well may be indicated. The severity of the symptoms and disturbances may necessitate hospitalization and extended treatment in some cases. As with many disorders, early diagnosis and treatment can greatly reduce the disruption of the personality disorders.
Parents of teens with Personality Disorders are often stressed by the struggles of rearing a child with such disruptive behaviors. Experts recommend that unless there is an active threat to the teen or the family, graduated measures be employed, beginning with psychotheraputic approaches and escalating if necessary. Parents may also benefit from both family training and therapy to understand the nature of the problems of personality disorders and how best to respond.
